Be part of a  Documentary

We have been informed of a “casting” call for able-bodied blind people to participate (and appear) in a short documentary called “Albert’s Way”. The documentary will be filmed with a small crew under the direction of Jacek Laskus for three (3) days between June 18-24 on a 44 ft. sailboat led by Captain Albert Kolodji, out of Portland Harbor in Casco Bay. In the past Captain Albert has volunteered his time to teach sailing and racing to blind people, among them several past Executive Directors of The Iris Network. Jacek Laskus is an Award winner Cinematographer with a 30 + years of experience working in film and telling compelling stories.

Sailing represents freedom and adventure: cutting through the water and waves, guided by the winds and tides, responding to weather changes, the feeling of self-reliance. Collaboration of the skipper and crew working as a team; facing the joy and challenges that sailing offers. It is the invigorating feel of the wind in your face, and the thrill and sense of freedom.

The filmmakers want to produce a 15-20 minute documentary, created as a ‘visual portrait’ or poem, that will be will be featured in many prominent film festivals including Sundance and South-by-Southwest – in the U.S. and abroad, as well as submitted for various film industry awards. Selections of up to 6 participants from New England and an initial meetings will be held in the second part of April.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will benefit participants in many ways: selected “cast” will learn to sail, build confidence and skills, learn to collaborate as a team, and challenge emotional barriers that may help guide them in other aspects of their lives. It will promote growth as a human being from a new life experience, and give them some notoriety in the blindness community. Additionally, they will help build awareness of the possibilities and capabilities of people who are blind.
